Is a guardian (wali) required for a woman’s nikah?
Answer
In the Hanafi school the nikah of a sane, adult woman to a compatible (kufu) husband is valid even if contracted by herself, though it is recommended and more dignified to conclude it through her wali. Marrying a non-compatible man without the guardian’s consent may be contested by the wali.
