Is the mahr (dower) compulsory, and can it be waived?
Answer
Mahr is an obligatory right of the wife and must be specified and paid. The husband cannot reduce or cancel it unilaterally; it may only be waived if the wife, of her own free will, forgives part or all of it after the marriage.
