Can zakat money be used to build a masjid?
Answer
No. A valid zakat payment requires tamleek — transferring ownership of the wealth to an eligible poor person. Constructing a masjid, road or well does not fulfil tamleek, so zakat funds cannot be used for it; general charity (sadaqah) should be used instead.
